Yang Tao (right) hands a parcel to a customer on Nov 4. PROVIDED TO CHINA DAILY

The unbearable winter chill couldn’t stop their steps. With curiosity and excitement, villagers at the foot of Mount Qomolangma hurry up to open their parcels at a delivery office. At an altitude of 4,119 meters, this is the world’s highest delivery service station.

Located in the town of Tashi Dzom in Tibet autonomous region, the delivery office was set up in 2016. Before that, local people had to spend around four hours to collect parcels from the county seat. But the delivery office brings great convenience and therefore encourages more people to order online.

According to Yang Tao, the only courier at the delivery office, the office handled only 17 parcels in its first month. But thanks to the fast-growing logistics industry, the number has grown steadily to an average of 200 per month.

Not only has the number of parcels increased, but the items being delivered have become richer in variety.

“At the beginning, the orders were mainly clothes. Now it could be something like digital items, vehicle parts, snacks, cosmetics, sports gear or heating appliances,” Yang told China Daily.

Though people in China’s eastern regions may take it for granted, the delivery office indeed makes a difference for the local people.

Tsering Dekyi, a 25-year-old primary school teacher in the town, has been a big fan of online shopping since university. “It is out of my expectations that we can have a delivery service here. I am happy that I can go shopping online as before,” she said. “I prefer to shop online as there are not many shops around.”

This also helps aid the country’s economy. Nationwide, China is working to boost the domestic market as part of the “dual-circulation” development pattern.

Ding Kun, an employee of Cainiao Network, told China Daily that “people cannot easily access online shopping when there is no delivery office. Now the service can help people in remote areas explore a different world.”
