And on Nov 11, Wu Dajing, 24, set a new world record. It took him just 39.505 seconds to finish the men’s 500-meter race at the 2018 Short Track World Cup, which took place in Salt Lake City, US. There Wu broke his own previous record of 39.584 seconds, which he set at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February.

Shaoang Liu, the Hungarian short track speed skater who competed against Wu at the World Cup, was left shaking his head in disbelief after the race.

“It’s pretty great to have been in a world record race,” Liu told the International Skating Union’s official website. “The rest of us are all on a certain level but Wu Dajing is just, like, ‘up here’.”

The fastest skater in the world, Wu has often been compared to Usain Bolt, the fastest runner on Earth, not only for dominating his sport, “but also for his unusual height (182 cm, tall for a short tracker) and the likelihood that he will be a star at an Olympics in China”, as NBC Sports explained.

Wu’s success comes from his self-discipline. He started to skate at the age of 10. He got up at 4 am every day to practice. On the reality show Back to Field, Wu said he never eats meat or has carbonated drinks, even though he loves cola very much. Only once has Wu broken his self-made rule – just after his win at the Winter Olympics.
