书名“浮生”二字出自李白诗《春夜宴从弟桃李园序》中“夫天地者，万物之逆旅也;光阴者，百代之过客也。而浮生若梦，为欢几何?”。
关于沈复的生平记载，寥寥无几。据其所著《浮生六记》，他出身于官僚家庭，志不在朝野，甘愿和自幼相爱，青梅竹马的妻子陈芸过着布衣蔬食的生活。
《浮生六记》记的是这对夫妻平凡的家居生活，两人苦中作乐，琴瑟和鸣;记的是他们的人生坎坷，困顿离合，人情世故;记的是他们去往各地游玩的所见所闻。

林语堂因“素好《浮生六记》，发愿译成英文，使世人略知中国一对夫妇之恬淡可爱生活”，大约于1936年，出版了《浮生六记》的英译版，Six Chapters of A Floating Life。
